Product Debut: Hoodman  FlyRight Sling Strap

Drones and their operators run the gamut. Heavy, specialized birds flown by experienced professionals to newbies testing the waters with their latest birthday present. No matter what the experience level, there are certain laws we all have to abide by. Even though the specifics may differ by country, safety is the name of the game and <a href="https://www.groundcontrolresources.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ground Control Drone Resources</a> was created to aid in that process.
Our signature product is the Flight Checklist and Emergency Procedures document. It&rsquo;s a Pre-Flight Hub that was designed to be used on your computer at home, your mobile device in the field or printed out and included in your kit. It&rsquo;s full of links that take you to the sites needed for flight planning and airspace authorization. Similar to an app on your phone, the intention is to have everything at your fingertips, but accessible in multiple ways.

I&rsquo;m a multitasker. So when planning a flight, I prefer to use my computer at home. With my checklist open, I click on its numerous flight-planning links, opening several different browser windows at a time. With all the information in front of me, I can easily read and cross reference what I need to know before leaving the house or even accepting a job.
When preparing for a flight in the USA, I first click on a LAANC site like Aloft or Airmap to see if my flight will be in controlled airspace. If flying a DJI product, I then click the link to their Fly Safe Geo Zone Map to see if an unlock will be required. Next, I&rsquo;ll check the weather via a site like UAV Forecast and lastly, I&rsquo;ll give the FAA&rsquo;s NOTAMs and Temporary Flight Restrictions a look.
When flying in Canada, the Drone Site Selection Tool is good for checking airspace. Finding Provincial Parks (where drones aren&rsquo;t allowed) is a little harder but we have links to maps for each province and territory showing just that. Also listed are the phone numbers for each Flight Information Centre, plus a map showing the FIC regions. If flying in controlled airspace, our Nearby Aerodromes form is essential for listing the direction and distance you&rsquo;ll be flying from an airport, plus it has room for the aerodrome&rsquo;s name, code, emergency phone numbers and more. This information can be typed in on your computer or filled in by hand. And if you need to convert a street address into GPS coordinates, there&rsquo;s a link for that, as well.
After the Pre-Flight Hub section is the actual checklist. This includes checkboxes that can be ticked via computer, mobile device or penciled in, depending on how you&rsquo;re using it. This is a more general list that can be utilized by most drone operators around the world. It was formatted to fit onto one page, so it can easily be included in your drone kit. We understand that everyone has different procedures and our checklist is intended to be more of a guide. Hopefully there are some useful nuggets that keep you from forgetting an important step or help avoid an accident down the road.
The next sections are our Emergency Procedures and Troubleshooting Tips. Since reporting an accident or flyaway differs from country to country, our USA and Canada checklists include when you need to file a report and links to the corresponding government agencies.

The last page includes recommended settings for flying indoors. Even though it&rsquo;s DJI-specific, no one wants their drone to return home when there&rsquo;s a ceiling overhead. Operators of other brands will benefit even if their setting names differ slightly. Also on this page are regulations for flying at night (USA and Canada only) and links to information about nighttime illusions. I use at least some portion of my Flight Checklist and Emergency Procedures document every time I fly. With so many details to worry about: from locations and laws to weather and camera settings, it helps to have everything laid out in front of you - especially when flying for a client and distractions are more likely. As mentioned, I access my list on the computer for pre-flight planning and then use the printed out version when in the field. For those that prefer to use their phones, it works great on there too. This checklist is about having all the necessary information available, wherever you may be.
Another product that we offer is our Guide to Hyperlapse Creation document. Even though some drones have a Hyperlapse setting, you have much more control over the end product by following our steps and recommendations both during the shoot and afterwards in the edit. Considering how much time goes into planning each of my hyperlapses, getting just one detail wrong can make all of it a wasted effort. That&rsquo;s why I use my Hyperlapse guide every time.

For those that are new to hyperlapses, I explain what I do and why. That way you aren&rsquo;t blindly following my recommendations. You can use my settings as a baseline and find what works for your particular situation. A perfect example is day vs night settings. Typically, I prefer the mechanical shutter. But at night I go with the digital shutter, hoping it&rsquo;ll create less shake in those low light conditions. Another recommendation is to find the dimensions of your camera&rsquo;s sensor and chose an aspect ratio that matches (for my Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 it&rsquo;s 3:2). That way you&rsquo;re capturing as much information as possible and will have plenty of detail to spare after any stabilization or cropping that might occur.
For those of us without much editing experience, this portion of the Hyperlapse guide is essential. It explains how to edit all your photos in one fell swoop and then import them into your preferred editing software. I then step through the editing and stabilization process. And finally I offer advice on exporting options. I use Adobe products so my workflow is Lightroom &rarr; After Effects &rarr; Media Encoder but there are plenty of other great options out there. Again, all these details are easy to forget so having this guide is not only a great starting point but also a helpful reference guide.

Living in the US, I obtained my Part 107 on the first day it was offered. I had already created my own flight checklist but after moving to Canada, I realized a whole new checklist had to be created for a different set of laws and procedures. Compiling all this information into two well organized, clickable documents shortened my pre-flight planning times and I figured others could benefit from them, as well.
Shortly before the move to Canada, a friend showed me some hyperlapses he had shot and I was hooked. From a creative standpoint, my mind was spinning with all the cool ideas I wanted to try out. I watched a ton of instructional videos on both the &ldquo;how to fly&rdquo; and the &ldquo;how to edit&rdquo; techniques but I discovered they didn&rsquo;t have all the answers. After a lot of trial and error, I started to find what worked for me and what didn&rsquo;t. Like the checklists, I had to write everything down or else I would forget. Especially with the editing, which I didn&rsquo;t do often enough for it to stay fresh in my mind.
A funny side note: By 2020 I had already shot a wide variety of hyperlapses but needed a couple more to finish my reel. When COVID hit, I finally had the time to get those last couple of shots. Unfortunately, when I needed traffic and movement, all I got were empty streets.

Professional drone pilots can&rsquo;t see their drones when they get more than 200m away. They become tiny specks in the sky at 100m and in low light they quickly vanish from view.&nbsp;

By overlaying data onto the real world environment via the AR glasses, rescuers can have a better understanding of their surroundings when searching for people in need of help. AR could also be used to provide remote assistance during dangerous operations such as firefighting and hazardous materials response.
<h5>Security&nbsp;</h5>
In the military or policing, drones are deployed as surveillance and reconnaissance tools to provide valuable intelligence on potential targets or threats. AR glasses could improve the reconnaissance capabilities, allow smaller drones to fly long distances beyond the visual line of sight and do investigations of dangerous tactical situations. We have a number of police forces using our software.
<h5>Conservation and Research</h5>
In the realm of conservation and research, drones have been instrumental in helping scientists observe wildlife from a distance without disturbing them. They can also be used to monitor environmental conditions such as forest growth or water levels. Using AR glasses pilots can for instance take control of long distance BVLOS flights and see other aviation data many kilometres away from the flight starting point.
<h5>Mining</h5>
The ability to display AR real-time data in hazardous, dark conditions with low ceilings, and obstacles everywhere is very useful in mining environments. For instance, miners can see where their drone is, from around corners, understand the telemetry and help them to identify any potential risks before putting themselves in potential danger. AR also helps visualise digging areas, facilitating the task of identifying the next areas to explore.&nbsp;
<h5>Maintenance and Inspection&nbsp;</h5>
Similarly, maintenance workers could use AR glasses with their drone to quickly locate damaged equipment or infrastructure within large facilities, ships, windmills, agricultural environments and many more difficult to navigate locations. The technology can help reduce human error and enhance safety for workers.

The product design and functionality are what set the chargers apart from the rest. Most drone battery chargers are designed to charge one battery at a time, and some taking upwards of 90+ minutes to charge one battery.

We have seen the boom, constant changes, failures, and successes. As many have already learned, drones make for a tough industry. There are periods of time where every week brings a new innovation or regulation, necessitating consistent active research to stay informed on pivotal matters. How a company responds to this new information is crucial. Through our own journey we have found that flexibility, maintaining values, customer support, and product quality are the keys to staying afloat as a business.
<h5>Conscientious Adaptation</h5>

Conscientious business models require thorough, complete action in all areas. Ask not just how your company&rsquo;s enterprises could be affected but how your customers&rsquo; experiences may change. Make conscious predictions that consider the entire journey of your customers&rsquo; potential experiences interacting with and using the products and services of your company.
Will their ability to use your products or services be impacted in the short term or the (less considered) long term? Perhaps they&rsquo;ll be able to buy your products with the same level of ease, but they may face operational hurdles months or years down the road due to delayed regulatory enforcement dates.
Aim to solve for these complications in advance. How can you modify your current products or services to solve potential obstacles? If modifying your offerings is not feasible, adjust your communication efforts to provide resources and educate your customers on how they can navigate any possible complications.
Maintaining this detailed level of follow-through is a fruitful practice that returns in the form of recommendations and genuine endorsements that increase brand awareness.
<h5>Facilitating Logistical and Conceptual Adaptation </h5>

When Fruity Chutes was founded in 2007, we were making parachutes for rocketry recovery. Although our focus was centered around rocketry applications, we created our business model with an extensible framework: one that creates space for opportunities which are yet to be known. This means flexibility on all fronts, including logistical (such as manufacturing capabilities) and conceptual (readiness to learn) allowances for adaptation.
This became a major point of utility. After just two years in business, we received inquiries about drone recovery. We saw how our parachutes could be optimized for UAV applications, and we knew what deployment gear would best suit drone airframes. Noting this opportunity for growth, we dove into the required research and development. Our logistical flexibility facilitated exploration of these possibilities, and our conceptual flexibility made it possible to consider this opportunity in the first place.
<h5>Putting Action to Words on Customer Success </h5>

&ldquo;Our customers&rsquo; success is our success.&rdquo; This is one of our major philosophies and one that is shared by many other companies. It sounds intuitive enough; your customers are the foundation of your company&rsquo;s existence. If they benefit from your offerings, they&rsquo;ll support the continuation and growth of your business. However, this thoughtform is rarely so simple in actual practice.
In an industry which cultivates large financial opportunities, companies and investors can narrow their focus to short term profits. This can give way to a slippery slope where you lose sight of what your customer needs and start creating products in anticipation of profits. For some, this slope is gradual, slowly moving away from real, desired solutions. For others, the slope is steep, pushing to fabricate demand and popular perception of need.
This will not serve you in the long term. Creating products for your customers&rsquo; existing and forthcoming needs and addressing customer requests with honest interpersonal investment will serve you in the long run. This will even sometimes mean recommending a competitor's products because they are what a customer really needs. We have actually gained customers later down the line after we made a recommendation for another company&rsquo;s product.
<h5>Resisting Swaying With Every Industry Development </h5>
Working in an ever-changing landscape, one can easily become swept up in the promises of new technologies and emerging applications. Switching gears and pursuing new enterprises can be a great sign of opportunity awareness and responsiveness. On the other hand, not every new venture is a good fit. It&rsquo;s imperative to avoid a &ldquo;yes-person&rdquo; attitude. Eagerness can make for hasty decisions, and the desire to take on every opportunity can obscure your original goals. Know your company&rsquo;s niche, and take care not to unsustainably overextend yourself or your resources.
Additionally, while listening and adapting to the needs of your customers and the industry is important, it is only worthwhile when aligned to your company&rsquo;s mission and core values. If these are to be compromised by the proposed venture, continue on as you are. You can save the proposition in the &ldquo;back pocket&rdquo; of your mind in case you need ideas down the road.
There have been many times when we paused to consider requests or industrial changes and decided if it was in our best interest to adapt and change. For all the opportunities that have come our way, many have been a clear &ldquo;yes&rdquo; while others were best answered with &ldquo;no.&rdquo; For the times where we decided &ldquo;no,&rdquo; we have had zero regrets. We have also returned to some opportunities once conditions changed and the time was right.
<h5>Looking Ahead </h5>
The realm of UAS technology is exciting both to witness and to be a part of. These four principles have proven time and again to be effective methods for sustaining company growth. Applying them multiplies the longevity of your company, but it&rsquo;s important to remember that they are not one-and-done solutions. They are practices, ones you must continuously uphold. It is essential to check in with all levels of a business&rsquo; employees and associated persons to ensure everyone is operating with a common understanding of these practices.
At Fruity Chutes, we do this on a regular basis in our team meetings. We currently see great development in drones for defense, racing, and transport of not just goods but people. For all of these sectors, we ask ourselves:

<h5>First FAA-Approved Remote ID Modules</h5>
Dronetag introduced their smallest and lightest Remote ID devices in 2022. Dronetag devices Mini and Beacon are the first FAA-approved drone Remote ID accessories listed in a <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://uasdoc.faa.gov/listDocs/RID000000025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Declaration of Compliance</a>. Dronetag Mini and Beacon are completely independent of the drone brand and model. Their battery lasts up to 16 hours and can be charged directly from the drone. Dronetag Mini weighs 1.12oz, and Beacon only 0.56oz. Both devices are operated by one button and are accompanied by an app for device and flight management.
Dronetag Mini is an add-on device that transmits identification and location data to other airspace users via cellular networks and Bluetooth. The device is capable of both Network &amp; Direct/Broadcast Remote ID. Network Remote ID is not a hot topic in the U.S. yet, but it is mandatory for planned U-Space projects and UTM applications in the EU.
The second add-on device, Dronetag Beacon, is a bare minimum for compliance in the U.S. and EU. It transmits data using Bluetooth to a range of two miles and covers all Direct/Broadcast Remote ID requirements.
&ldquo;As a product design and customer experience-oriented company, all our devices are very easy to operate and provide users with only simple settings. Everything works with one click, and the device starts up in a matter of minutes,&rdquo; describes Lukas.

<h5>Standard Remote ID Drone Enabler</h5>
U.S. drone manufacturers are obliged to produce drones compliant with Standard Remote ID from the end of 2022. One of the easily-adopted solutions is Dronetag OEM solution called DRI&mdash;a small electronic part for drone manufacturers to integrate into their drone and equip them with Remote ID functionality. Dronetag&rsquo;s DRI is the smallest and lightest device offering affordable Direct Remote capability. It&rsquo;s the easiest way to acquire Remote ID technology without years of R&amp;D and product testing. To drone manufacturers, Dronetag offers assistance with obtaining Remote ID approval by FAA
From takeoff to shut down, the drone with Remote ID broadcasts its identification details, location and altitude, drone velocity, control station location and elevation, time mark, and emergency status.
&ldquo;Drones with our DRI instantly comply with EU and U.S. standards and regulations," says Lukas. "The only thing manufacturers must connect to our factory-ready modules are drone antennas and power supply&mdash;that is all it takes.&rdquo;&nbsp;
If the manufacturer does not use MAVlink, PX4, or Ardupilot controllers, Dronetag offers customization to produce a version fitting their hardware. Due to the forwarding feature, the DRI doesn&rsquo;t take away any existing ports, making integration possible without costly adjustments.

<h5>Software is a Key</h5>
Dronetag's Web and Mobile apps are a fundamental component of its ecosystem. Our flight-management app allows you to plan your flights, manage your inventory, and, most importantly, comply with the new European and U.S. Remote ID regulation.
The app is available for mobile devices (iOS and Android) and the web. You can download it and create your account for free. Naturally, you need a Dronetag IoT device and subscription to use the app's full potential.
Drone Scanner, is a public tool for scanning nearby flying drones. You can download it for iOS and Android&nbsp;devices for free. It is an application for scanning Remote ID data from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles nearby, such as identification and location. It gathers the data and presents them to the user on a map. Drone Scanner can track all the nearby flights over Direct Remote ID standards. You can browse real-time data about drones on a detailed map highlighting specific flying space zones.
The application is inspired by the OpenDroneID Android receiver application. In contrast to the OpenDroneID application, Drone Scanner is multi-platform. It offers a fresh, user-friendly design and additional features like drone labeling and tracking or exporting data to CSV format.
<h5>More to Come</h5>
&ldquo;As there is still much to discover and improve in the drone market, we are currently developing three more products,&rdquo; says Lukas.
In the airspace management world, there is an unsolved question of securing low-level air traffic. A central system for its management doesn&rsquo;t exist. However, apart from drones, even parachutists, paragliders, recreational and sports aircraft, and others operate at low levels.
That&rsquo;s why Dronetag has started developing an ADS-L device that will be intended for those who want to be visible even during low-altitude flights.&nbsp;
"Our ADS-L device will allow them to be identifiable as ADS-B devices&mdash;which are unfortunately very expensive for recreational pilots yet not very suitable due to their weight and dimension,&rdquo; explains Lukas. "So, Dronetag will develop its own transmitters focusing on size and weight, respecting the specifics of the low-altitude operations."
Another challenging area apart from data transmission is data reception. Dronetag plans to create receivers that should read data from drone Remote IDs and ADS-L. Anyone can use these receivers to monitor the desired area permanently.&nbsp;
"Imagine it as a small box you buy, place it outside, and&mdash;voil&aacute;&mdash;it reads data from all drones and recreational aircraft moving around the location,&rdquo; says Lukas, adding that the data will be sent to the Dronetag server, which distributes it to the cloud.
Dronetag plans to produce a universal hardware receiver able to read not only Remote ID, but also radio communication between drone and operator. That means that data from all drones moving in the surrounding area will be readable by anyone. Operation of these readers will be easy.
"When you plug this device into your phone or tablet, it becomes a reader of all the drones moving around," says Lukas. "And not only those equipped with Remote ID. The Drone Scanner application itself receives data from Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, but not all drones transmit through these channels. The regulation requires Remote ID, but their drones are almost invisible if someone wants to bypass it and flies without digital identification. What cannot be bypassed, though, is drone radio communication and control connection.&rdquo;

We have all been there before, You are out flying and you realize all of your batteries are drained. What now?
If you are flying recreationally, your options include:

<li>Land your drone. Pack up. Go home.</li>
<li>Plug your batteries into the OEM charger and hope you can get one of them half-charged.</li>
<li>Ask your friend to borrow a battery, if possible.</li>
</ol>
If you are flying commercially, your only hope is to plug your batteries into the OEM charger and pray to whatever god to which you subscribe. That is never a good situation. Yet, over the last six years of my drone-flying career, this has been the fallback for when battery life was running short&mdash;a treacherous balancing act that left me looking unprofessional more often than I would have liked in front of clients.

Their chargers are designed to be durable and portable for the most remote and rugged environments. They&rsquo;re committed to providing the fastest and most efficient charging solutions on the market.

What really interested me, though, was the proprietary charging algorithm their portable charging stations feature. Colorado Drone Chargers offer drone charging systems that charge four drone batteries and one flight controller at the same time. These are rapid-speed chargers, but still safe for your batteries, utilizing a charging algorithm that manages each battery and device&rsquo;s current, temperature, and voltage levels. The average charge time, according to Colorado Drone Chargers, for batteries at a 20-percent charge to a 98+% charge is just 55-60 minutes, and that&rsquo;s the average time to charge all four batteries and a flight simultaneously.
After hearing this information, I knew I needed to see it for myself. Patrick and his team at Colorado Drone Chargers graciously sent me their <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://coloradodronechargers.com/dji-mavic-3-prcs-elite/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mavic 3 Portable Recharging Station (PRCS)</a> to see what their product was all about. I mention this because I want to be totally transparent that the product I&rsquo;m reviewing was sent to me (to keep) in exchange for the effort put into this written review and the video version of this review. That will not influence this review in any way, shape, or form and I am committed to being honest about this device&rsquo;s capabilities and utilization for drone pilots in the field.
We will start with the pros for this product and how I felt it performed in contrast to its billing.
<h5>Pros</h5>
&bull; Water-tight and durable.
&bull; Portable and nicely weighted for automobile travel.
&bull; Peace-of-mind storage solution with four battery storage slots.
&bull; Comes in three different colors: black, orange, and tan.
&bull; Charges four batteries and controller at once.
&bull; Charge Time from 20 percent to near-full-charge is Around 1 hour.
There is no question that Colorado Drone Chargers deliver on their promises with their portable recharging stations. Everything advertised about this product pulls through to real-world experience and the overall set-up and use is seamless. It is just as simple as unpack, plug-in, and charge. There is no updating required, no installation of applications or software, nothing &ndash; which is exactly what one wants when dealing with recharging their intelligent flight batteries.
As professional remote pilot, I can say to you with full confidence that I trust the Mavic 3 PRCS from Colorado Drone Chargers with each of my $210 <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://m.dji.com/product/dji-mavic-3-intelligent-flight-battery" target="_blank" rel="noopener">M2 Intelligent Flight Batteries</a> and my RC-N1 Drone Controller while charging and the exterior shell of the case has proven to me on several occasions that it is capable of top-tier protection while storing and transporting batteries. I&rsquo;ve dropped it, kicked it around, had a forklift push it and knock it into a wall, had it in a dusty and grimey auto shop and more and not once did the Mavic 3 PRCS flinch under pressure.
While this product has won my trust, I would be remiss if I did not talk about where I felt the Mavic 3 PRCS fell short of my expectations.
<h5>Cons</h5>
&bull; Not a travel-friendly device for airlines and weekend warriors.
&bull; Disappointing lack of storage space for accessories besides batteries.
&bull; No wireless charging feature for travel or short-term storage.
Yes, this product absolutely checks a lot of boxes for me as a professional remote pilot, but it definitely lost points in its ability to be travel-friendly and act as an accessory storage space too. Where it lost the most points for me and makes me hesitate to recommend this product to everyone is its lack of wireless charging capabilities. If this had a smaller or more convenient form-factor, was able to store at least the drone&rsquo;s remote controller, and was capable of wireless charging, I would absolutely say this product is for everybody who flies drones &ndash; recreationally or commercially.
Because it does not have an ultra-convenient form-factor, is not able to store accessories easily, and does not have wireless charging capabilities, then I would say this portable recharging station is really only able to cater to the needs of commercial remote pilots. It is a great fit for commercial pilots who need something sized-well for automobiles and even without wireless charging &ndash; most commercial sites will have access to power so this can be plugged-in and utilized to charge batteries efficiently and simultaneously during flight operations. This translates to a near perpetual flight time for the remote pilot and the ability to go for as long as the job requires.
All-in-all, the products offered by Colorado Drone Chargers are top-notch. My experience from beginning-to-end with the Mavic 3 PRCS has been nothing short of wonderful and if you are a commercial remote pilot that runs into frequent battery charging issues and cycles, Colorado Drone Chargers is the perfect solution for you. One final note to consider is service after sale. Colorado Drone Chargers prides themselves on offering premier customer service and support and a testament to that is their &ldquo;no questions asked&rdquo; warranty that comes on all of their portable recharging stations. If you have ANY issues with your product and its performance all you have to do is contact Colorado Drone Chargers and they will honor the warranty with absolutely no questions asked. You do not get any better than that service-wise.
