Skymagic Astounds with Pioneering Laser Drones

The Biden administration advocates increasing hydrogen production as a clean energy resource, which is in turn inspiring some tech entrepreneurs to develop hydrogen-powered drones that may be able to fly longer, farther, and carry heavier payloads than models driven by batteries.
"We are at a pivotal moment in the drone industry," says <a href="https://www.hevendrones.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Heven Drones</a> CEO Bentzion Levinson, whose company has released two hydrogen-powered drones. "With these hydrogen-powered drones, we are redefining the possibilities of what drones can achieve, while leveraging a clean and readily available fuel source."
The <a href="https://www.hevendrones.com/product/h2d200/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Heven H2D200</a> can reportedly carry twice the payload of a typical electric-powered drone (10 lbs.) and has a range of approximately 317 miles. It also claims four hours of flight time. The <a href="https://www.hevendrones.com/product/h2d250/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Heven H2D250</a> bests even those numbers, with a payload limit of 22 pounds, a potential range of 466 miles, and up to eight hours of flight time.
While hydrogen infrastructure is not yet ready for prime time, the possibilities of clean-energy and increased performance could favorably impact the droning industry's future. Heven Drones Embrace the future of Hydrogen Power

As AI technology moves ever faster, it feels like humanity is racing to build the software-based sword of its own destruction&mdash;at least if you're into the fictional Skynet plot device of the Terminator films.
But then, reality can sometimes deliver quite a wake-up call...
For example, China has reportedly developed "human-brain drones" that can collaborate just like, well, people.
The drone swarms can engage in group chats to discuss and assign jobs or tasks using human language to communicate.
While drone-swarm software has been typically devised to emulate the communication used by ant and bee colonies, the scientists believe this new human-language technology can help improve areas such as search and rescue and airborne security patrols.
Thankfully, the human-language protocol lets actual people eavesdrop on the drones and their plans. Whew.

&ldquo;The drones showcased abilities such as human-like dialogue interaction, proactive environmental awareness, and autonomous entity control to adjust flight status in real time,&rdquo; stated a report on WeChat.
The &ldquo;human brain&rdquo; inserted into each drone is based on a Chinese open-source language model called InternLM, and the dialog capabilities are designed to enhance communication between human beings and machines.

Besides maintenance tasks, during disaster situations, critical tasks must be carried on in order to reduce the level of danger. "Ricardo Rosales Martinez, Hannibal Paul, and Kazuhiro Shimonomura from Ritsumeikan University in Japan are equipping drones with an add-on thrust vectoring device in order to open valves in high or inaccessible locations, where unmanned ground robots are unable to go."

Drones Take On Dangerous infrastructure disasters

Unmanned aerial system (UAS) technologies from <a href="https://aerospace.honeywell.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Honeywell</a> are redefining what is possible in the world of uncrewed aircraft. Honeywell has made enormous progress since forming one of the aviation industry&rsquo;s first dedicated UAS/urban air mobility (UAM) business units in 2020.
Leading UAS developers the world over partner with Honeywell for electric and hydrogen propulsion systems, advanced detect and avoid (DAA) radar, beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) capabilities, fly-by-wire controls, actuation technology and much more. The company also brings a unique combination of experience, domain knowledge and certification expertise to the table.
<h5>UAS Propulsion and Power Systems</h5>
Aircraft propulsion has been a Honeywell strong suit for more than 60 years and our powerful and reliable <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://aerospace.honeywell.com/us/en/products-and-services/product/hardware-and-systems/engines/tpe331-turboprop-engine" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TPE-331 engine</a> has powered the General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper UAS on its vital U.S. Air Force missions for more than two decades. The MQ-9 is also equipped with Honeywell&rsquo;s embedded global positioning system/inertial navigation system (EGI). Honeywell's T-53 engine&nbsp;powers the K-MAX UAS, which is a variant of the K-MAX heavy-lift helicopter.
In the electric propulsion space, Honeywell is working with <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.denso.com/global/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DENSO</a>, a leading global supplier of automotive mobility systems, on clean, efficient technology for current and future UAS and UAM aircraft. The two companies have developed a small but powerful electric motor for the new <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://lilium.com/jet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lilium Jet</a>, the world&rsquo;s first eVTOL jet designed for regional air mobility. Weighing less than nine pounds, the e-motor has a peak output of over 100 kilowatts and will produce zero operating emissions, making it a great option for UAS developers.
Honeywell hydrogen fuel cells already power small <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://aerospace.honeywell.com/us/en/products-and-services/product/hardware-and-systems/honeywell-hydrogen-fuel-cell" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UAS platforms,</a> including commercial and military drones, on missions that are beyond the capabilities of uncrewed aircraft powered by battery or gasoline engines. In fact, fuel cells more than triple the range of a typical small drone powered by batteries or internal combustion engines, vastly expanding the kinds of missions the vehicle can take on.
Honeywell also is developing a new <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://aerospace.honeywell.com/us/en/products-and-services/product/hardware-and-systems/electric-power/the-honeywell-turbogenerator" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1-megawatt turbogenerator</a> that is a natural offspring of the company&rsquo;s extensive background in aircraft electrification and power generation. The new generator will be used in flight or on the ground to recharge batteries to power an aircraft&rsquo;s electric motors or provide electricity to drive motors. The generator, when run in the opposite direction, can also be used as an e-motor to turn aircraft propellers directly.
<h5>UAS Avionics and Communications Systems </h5>
The uncrewed <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://aerospace.honeywell.com/us/en/about-us/press-release/2020/10/honeywell-provide-pipistrel-advanced-flight-control-technology" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Textron Pipistrel Nuuva 300</a> aircraft will carry up to 1,000 pounds of cargo over distances of more than 180 miles. The Nuuva 300 will be remotely operated, thanks to an advanced Honeywell satellite communications system, compact fly-by-wire flight controls and autonomous navigation software.&nbsp;
Drones become global assets with Honeywell&rsquo;s help. Introduced in 2020, the <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://aerospace.honeywell.com/en/pages/sff-uav-satcom" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Small UAV SATCOM</a> enables UAVs to send and receive information beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) using the reliable and secure Inmarsat SwiftBroadband network over long distances. The system gives small drones the broadband communications capabilities to take on long-distance missions normally flown by bigger UAVs, helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft.

Honeywell developed the industry-leading <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://aerospace.honeywell.com/us/en/products-and-services/product/hardware-and-systems/cockpit-systems-and-displays/compact-fly-by-wire" target="_blank" rel="noopener">compact fly-by-wire system</a>, which drives flight controls electrically and allows for the complex, software-defined flight control essential for UAS aircraft. The system uses the latest in electronic processing technology to bring the safety and performance Honeywell pioneered in air transport fly-by-wire systems into the unmanned aerial systems market.&nbsp;This all happens in a package smaller than a hardcover book.

Compact fly-by-wire system.
The IntuVue RDR-84K <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://aerospace.honeywell.com/us/en/products-and-services/product/hardware-and-systems/weather-radar/intuvue-rdr-84k-band-radar-system" target="_blank" rel="noopener">detect-and-avoid radar</a> uses multiple beams to &ldquo;see&rdquo; more things at the same time than any commercially available radar. In addition to detecting weather, the system can simultaneously scan and receive radar returns from other aircraft, ground vehicles, buildings and even people. Once an obstacle is detected, the vehicle reacts autonomously to avoid potential conflicts.&nbsp;
Advanced <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://aerospace.honeywell.com/us/en/products-and-services/product/hardware-and-systems/actuation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">actuation technology </a>from Honeywell acts as a UAV&rsquo;s nervous system. Honeywell actuators convert electricity to mechanical force and make things move. They take commands from the remote pilot and fly-by-wire flight control computer to adjust control surfaces throughout the drone&rsquo; mission profile. A product of Honeywell&rsquo;s 60-plus years of actuator experience, today&rsquo;s actuators are smaller, lighter, more reliable and more cost-effective than ever, making them ideal for UAV applications.

HONEYWELL INNOVATIONS TAKE UAS CAPABILITIES TO NEW HEIGHTS

Caltech has been on fire recently with its innovative robotic and drone projects.
We just covered Caltech's <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="http://cast.caltech.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Center for Autonomous Systems and Technologies</a> (CAST) "Transformer Drone" on July 28, and you can read about that crazy tech device <a href="https://www.thedroningcompany.com/blog/-transformer-drone-flies-drives-and-walks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">right here</a>.
But now, the Caltech researchers have unleashed LEONARDO on the world. You can also call this biped, flying robot by its full name&mdash;LEgs ONboARD drOne&mdash;or just LEO.

<div class="embedded-image__wrapper richtext-image Right Medium">While the Transformer Drone can walk about like an animal, motor about like a go-cart, or launch itself into the sky, LEO is reportedly the first robot with multi-joint legs and propeller thrusters. It can hop, manage itself on a slackline, ride a skateboard, and, oh yes, fly.</div>
"We drew inspiration from nature," says Bren Professor of Aerospace and Control and Dynamical Systems <a href="https://eas.caltech.edu/people/sjchung" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Soon-Jo Chung.</a>
"Think about the way birds are able to flap and hop to navigate telephone lines. A complex yet intriguing behavior happens as birds move between walking and flying. We wanted to understand and learn from that. In addition, there is a similarity between how a human wearing a jet suit controls their legs and feet when landing or taking off, and how LEO uses synchronized control of distributed propeller-based thrusters and leg joints. We wanted to study the interface of walking and flying from the dynamics and control standpoint."
Bipedal robots are able to tackle complex real-world terrains by using the same sort of movements that humans use, like jumping or running or even climbing stairs, but they are stymied by rough terrain. Flying robots easily navigate tough terrain by simply avoiding the ground, but they face their own set of limitations: high energy consumption during flight and limited payload capacity. "Robots with a multimodal locomotion ability are able to move through challenging environments more efficiently than traditional robots by appropriately switching between&nbsp;their available&nbsp;means of movement. In particular,&nbsp;LEO aims to bridge the gap between the two disparate domains of aerial and bipedal locomotion that are not typically intertwined in existing robotic systems," says Kyunam Kim, postdoctoral researcher at Caltech and co-lead author of the&nbsp;Science Robotics&nbsp;paper.
LEO stands 2.5 feet tall, has two legs with three actuated joints, and four propellers mounted at an angle on his shoulders. The propellers actually ensure that LEO is walking upright, and, of course, provide his superpower of flight.&nbsp;
"Because of its propellers, you can poke or prod LEO with a lot of force without actually knocking the robot over," says Caltech graduate student Elena-Sorina Lupu, who is co-author&mdash;along with Chung, Patrick Spieler, Kyunam Kim, and others&mdash;of a paper on LEO published in the October 2021 issue of Science Robotics.
The LEO project was born in 2019, and the team intends to evolve LEO's mobility by designing a rigid leg capable of supporting more of his weight and increasing the thrust force of the propellers. There will also be an AI factor, where LEO can determine how much of its weight is supported by his legs and how much needs to be supported by propellers when walking on treacherous terrain, as well as an autonomous drone landing algorithm that calculates the most appropriate combo of walking, flying, and hybrid locomotion he needs to get safely from one location to another.

Caltech builds another innovative drone

And now, real life is mirroring alien tech&mdash;thanks to some futuristic researchers at Caltech&rsquo;s <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="http://cast.caltech.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Center for Autonomous Systems and Technologies</a> (CAST).&nbsp;
Named M4&mdash;or Multi-Modal Mobility Morphobot&mdash;by its creators, the "Transformer Drone' can zip around on four wheels, stand on two wheels, use its wheels like feet and walk around, and use its wheels as rotors to get airborne.
And, much like the alien Transformers who take the guise of earthly animals when in battle mode, the M4 designers also found inspiration from nature.
The creators detailed their creative and scientific processes in a recent paper published in <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-023-39018-y" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nature Communications</a>.
Unfortunately for sci-fi aficionados, the M4 does not morph into a bird when it flies, or a meerkat when on two wheels, and so on. lnstead, it appears much like a rectangular appartus with four big wheels attached. Of course, those wheels have rotors inside for flying.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Our aim was to push the boundaries of robot locomotion by designing a system that showcases extraordinary mobility capabilities with a wide range of distinct locomotion modes," said Alireza Ramezani, one of the authors of the paper. "The M4 project successfully achieved these objectives.&rdquo;

The M4 uses AI to assess its environment and determine which form of motion is best for the location&mdash;whether it's water (better fly now), a flat floor (four-wheel drive), or obscured (stand on two wheels to determine next move). M4's ability to navigate complex terrain could be critical for search-and-rescue operations and even exploration of other planets, such as Mars. Research has been funded by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the National Science Foundation.
"When encountering unknown environments, only robots that have the ability to repurpose their multi-modal components aided by artificial intelligence can succeed,&rdquo; said CAST direction and paper co-author Mory Gharib.
