More than 1,000 drones were invited to the Coronation Concert of King Charles III on May 7, 2023.
But they weren't solely for the enjoyment of the new king at the Windsor Castle event.
In the United Kingdom's first-ever multiple-location drone show, ten towns and cities in the empire were treated to a dazzling choreography of lights&mdash;all featuring animals while a recorded message from King Charles about the critical importance of conservation accompanied the drone displays.

Disneyland Paris recently debuted a new Marvel Universe-themed drone show entitled Avengers: Power the Night. The eight-minute production&mdash;which also uses fireworks, projections, and an appropriately heroic soundtrack&mdash;features 500 drones, and its cost is estimated at $13 million.&nbsp;

Quite an investment&mdash;even for "Disney Magic."
Disneyland Paris partnered with France's <a href="https://www.dronisos.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dronisos</a> company to develop the Avengers show.
"We start with creative brainstorming," Disney designer Ben Spalding told Forbes' Caroline Reid. "Everything starts with an idea and foundational planning&ndash;what do we want to accomplish, how long do we want the performance to be, when will it happen, and how far can we go, creatively speaking."
Like many cinematic ventures, the drone-show designers used storyboards to set the action. Then, animation software produces a 3D rendering that can be viewed&mdash;virtually&mdash;and eventually translated into flight paths for the drones to follow.

The drones used for the Avengers show are based on the Parrot BeBop 2 quadcopter, but enhanced with special hardware and software. For example, the drones are stripped of unnecessary weight (so they can stay aloft longer), and the cameras common to consumer drones are replaced with the multi-coloured LEDs needed to render the images.&nbsp;
It's interesting to note that the drone show evolved from Disneyland Paris looking to think outside the box for its 30th anniversary last year. Due to the proximity of five villages and 30,000 residents, the massive fireworks shows&mdash;and the resulting noise and ash they generate&mdash;that are usually launched at Disneyland Anaheim and Disney World in Florida were deemed inappropriate and unviable. Initially, projections were used to enhance the limited pyrotechnics at the Paris theme park, and drones were also in the mix.&nbsp;
Eventually, things got crazier. Avengers: Power the Light, for example, deploys 500 drones to produce the detailed images desired by the production designers.
But the increased drone presence "comes at quite a cost," admits Spalding.
On its website, Dronisos broke down the cost of a single show featuring 500 drones at $136,000. The company says its cost structure includes 3D simulations, choreography, rehearsals, and up to 15 minutes of flight time. The show took three months to produce, and even though it is computer controlled, human pilots&mdash;and their fees&mdash;are still required to check the system, ensure a clear flight area, and give the final go-ahead if everything seems safe to launch. Dronisos uses four pilots to monitor the Disneyland Paris show.
Avengers: Power the Light is scheduled to run 95 days, which is how the $13 million investment in the production was calculated.
But while $13 million may appear to be a stratospheric cost, the figure is reportedly less than one percent of the 2021 expenses incurred by Disneyland Paris' operating entity, Euro Disney Associ&eacute;s.

Drones Celebrate Philadelphia Eagles Championship

It started with Big Ben chiming in the countdown to 2023. Then, the sky exploded with a vibrant and celebratory melange of fireworks, music, and drones.
The impressive fireworks were the stars of the sold-out show in London, but the drones added a wonderful tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, forming the ER II logo in the night sky, and then her visage and the image of her profile on a coin.
The colorful gala was enhanced with music, a voice recording from the late Queen herself, and added dialog from Dame Judi Dench. Later, King Charles III's voice presented a plea to preserve the future of the planet.

A celebratory home holiday extravaganza added some Top Gun: Maverick drama via a 400-drone light show above the candy canes, Christmas trees, and Santa and his reindeer. <a href="https://skyelementsdrones.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sky Elements Drones</a> provided the jet fighters and other film scenes to "Mach 10" the otherwise traditional holiday decorations.

It is worth noting the creation of choreography is one of the key stages in the preparation of a drone show. Each company has its own approach to working with drone show animation. Someone hires a professional animator to the team, someone attracts third-party companies to work on a 3D project, and someone involves independent 3D animators for each individual project. The result is always expected to be the same&mdash;drone-show choreography that will touch the heart of the viewer with its uniqueness.
In 2021, the competition expanded to 214 registrations from more than 104 countries&mdash;not only from 3D animators and choreographers, but also drone-show companies with different experiences.&nbsp;

YouTube celebrity <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/MrBeast6000" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MrBeast </a>carved out a massive niche by filming expensive stunts. By "massive niche," I mean the guy has 109 million subscribers to his MrBeast channel&mdash;which makes it the fifth most-subscribed video joint on all of YouTube.
Recently, MrBeast&mdash;who was born as Jimmy Donaldson&mdash;launched a stunt entitled "$1 vs. $1,000,000 Hotel Room." To date, the video has 50 million views. Spoiler Alert&mdash;The $1 room is a single mat in a hallway. The other rooms include a cave, an in-the-sea villa, a bus, and an island.&nbsp;
The $1 million "room" is actually a castle. Yeah, you probably guessed that. But it's quite a castle, as the room fee includes some pretty awesome experiences. One of those was a custom drone show created expressly for the guests. Wow.

Spend $1 Million on a Hotel Room, Get a Private Drone Show

You probably saw all of the news threads. Quite a few cities, towns, and locales&mdash;especially those in areas where summer wild fires are particular dangers&mdash;decided to replace traditional 4th of July fireworks displays with far-less-combustible drone shows.&nbsp;
Still, the time-honored displays of glittering, explosive beauty far outnumbered the tech showcases of software-controlled drone extravaganzas this year.
Drone shows are relatively new, after all, and one can assume the thrilling concussion and colorful sparkle of fireworks detonating a few hundred feet overhead remains a more exciting experience than lighted drones buzzing around making pictures in the sky.
But for how long?
Drones are safer than fireworks in high fire-risk locations, and, overall, they produce less pollution (no smoke and gunpowder) and are easier on the ears (I've not yet seen a dog dart under a bed or bark anxiously because a drone was hovering over a backyard, but the "boom-boom-ba-boom" of professional and noisy safe-and-sane fireworks drive pets bonkers).
