<p class="">When operationally required, drone defeat technologies fall into two broad categories. Hard-kill defeat, primarily in the domain of military applications, physically destroys or disables the drone but risks collateral injury or damage. Both sides are using thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of cheap and expendable drones, both in isolation and in concert with high-end military assets.</p>
<p>In a reconnaissance role, drones permit Russians to target Ukrainian positions with rocket attacks from helicopters, as well as track civilian movements and individual military formations. In equally devastating situations, they are strapped with payloads to do direct damage.</p>
<p>Instead of costing $500,000 or more, these drones cost around $4,000, and often far less.</p>
<p>The rate of capability advancement for even modest commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) drones is sobering.</p>
<p>In 2006, DJI was founded in a dorm room at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. A mere 16 years later, COTS drones, like DJI, are being used for ISR, contraband delivery, direct attack, and fully autonomous flight against personnel and strategic assets.</p>
<p>In fact, Russian Army General, Yuri Baluyevsky, said in August 2022 that the DJI Mavic&rsquo;s capability to spot for accurate indirect artillery fire proved &ldquo;revolutionary&rdquo; in Ukraine.</p>

<p>DroneShield has invested in advanced capabilities to ensure countermeasures meet the rate at which UAS or drone threats are evolving.</p>
<p>If we take a closer look at the current conflict, it&rsquo;s clear Russia&rsquo;s invasion of Ukraine has been a testbed for new military technologies, with unmanned aerial systems (UAS) a prime feature. This follows similar events during the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, and in the Middle East prior.</p>
<p>Commercial technology advancements will continue to increase the threat level by incorporating swarming, thermal imaging, LiDAR, GPS-denied navigation, and more. <p>Modern warfare and tactics will continue to evolve. With two recent, full-scale wars, and the current fight in Ukraine, we now see asymmetric warfare tactics being adopted quickly by conventional forces.</p>
<p>This means locating enemy drones and being able to defeat them is now critical. Unit costs need to be comparable to the threat being faced. While a $2-million-dollar missile might be a tactically valid solution, budgets won&rsquo;t stretch for more than one or two. Affordable counterdrone guns leverage radio jamming and can be used again and again. Importantly, you can have lots of them.</p>
<p>These capabilities aren&rsquo;t just crucial on the battlefield, but can keep us and our assets safer on home soil. For example, critical infrastructure is highly vulnerable to drones. This isn&rsquo;t restricted to physical attacks (ie. short-circuiting power grids by dangling wires onto sites), but extends cyberattacks where perpetrators can land undetected drones near national or state assets for the purposes of crippling operations or stealing highly sensitive information.</p>
<p>They are also being used for drug smuggling across borders and into prisons, bringing airports to a standstill (even from negligence), disrupting and causing panic at large events, and threatening meetings of world leaders.</p>

<p id="speakable-summary">Well, you and I probably can't buy this product, but it demonstrates how critical "rogue" drones are becoming, and the steps required to stop them from doing evil.</p>

Utilizing narrow-band &ldquo;comb&rdquo; jamming to ensure as little interference with other devices as possible, the DedroneDefender severs the connection between the drone and its pilot.</p>

<p>At 22-inches long and weighing just 7.5 lbs, the DedroneDefender offers portable and easy-to-use protection against malicious drones. But forget about neutralizing your annoying neighbor's "peekaboo" drone. At present, U.S. law prohibits the disabling of aircraft, and drones fall under that provision as much as a Southwest Airlines jet. Even local police can't knock a drone out of the sky. Unless you're Homeland Security or the Department of Defense responding to an alleged terrorist threat&mdash;and even those agencies need authorization to act&mdash;you can't mess with a drone.&nbsp;</p>

Dedrone Releases Portable DroneDefender

<p>In a scenario that is likely repeated across the globe, recreational-drone pilots are creating even more hazardous duties for the Honolulu Fire Department as the crews attempt rescue efforts.</p>
<p>&ldquo;A lot of these recreational drones are small, so it becomes harder for us to see them, and it becomes a safety hazard for us," says Justin Sato, HFD helicopter pilot. "The biggest hazard is mid-air collisions. Any time we have a strike with a drone&mdash;at the <em>minimum</em>&mdash;we have to put down and assess that damage.&ldquo;</p>
<p>The Federal Aviation Administration has warned drone pilots repeatedly to keep out of restricted air spaces&mdash;especially during rescue and fire-fighting operations. As a rule of thumb&mdash;as if one is needed, but here it is anyway&mdash;if you see first responders and/or emergency lights in your camera screen, you are too close to the action.</p>

Renegade Drone Pilots a Danger to First-Responders and Rescue Efforts

<p>A new "drone gun" is entering the war against Russian invaders in Ukraine.</p>
<p>Manufactured in the western Ukraine region of Ivano-Frankivsk, the <span style="color: #ba372a;"><strong>Kvertus Technology Antidron KVS</strong> <strong>G-6</strong></span> disables drone threats using radio signals to remotely disrupt and disable control of UAVs. The Antidron KVS G-6 has a defensive range of a little more than two miles.</p>
<p>"We are not damaging the drone," says Kvertus director of technology Yaroslav Filimonov. "With communication lost, it just loses coordination and doesn't know where to go. The drone lands where it is jammed, or can be carried away by the wind because it's uncontrollable."&nbsp;</p>
<p>The "undamaged" aspect of drones neutralized by the Antidron KVS G-6 is a key strategic benefit, as Ukrainian soldiers can retrieve downed Russian drones and use them to recover potentially valuable intel.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The gun was designed to provide simple aim-and-shoot operation&mdash;even in stressful battlefield situations&mdash;and all components are housed in a plastic frame with a battery attached (which is similar to an ammo magazine). Kvertus asserts the Antidron KVS G-6 can disrupt 2.4GHz and 5GHz remote control and video transmission, as well as GPS L2 (and L1) and GLONASS signals.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ba372a;"><strong>Radio Free Europe</strong></span> has reported that 80 KVS G-6s have been produced since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, with more than 100 additional guns on order. Many of those orders have come not from the Ukrainian army, but from volunteers and donors who are suppling Ukrainian military units fighting in the front lines. One Antidron KVS G-6 costs $12,000.</p>
